We believe that a piece is not done unless it has some type of embellishment on it. We want artists to step out of the box and embellish/manipulate/paint/dye their fiber pieces. If you already are doing this we commend you and if not come join in the fun!Fiber on a Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03964441100368892245noreply@blogger.comBlogger428125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4952934773333263122.post-1089747251107337642019-07-19T16:29:00.000-04:002019-07-19T16:29:52.197-04:00The Mail Came....Don't you just love it when your mail person delivers something wonderful? Well we got our copy of Quilting Arts Magazines' 100th issue....and we are in it. Quite frankly it just doesn't seem possible that this magazine has been around that long, but when I went to my bookshelves I was proven wrong. Winter 2001, was Number One....okay that doesn't seem possible.

I looked for this magazine all over Atlanta at the time trying to find a copy of it, eventually I put the search on the back burner. Several month's later a friend and I were driving to Quilt Surface Design Symposium, also known as QSDS, in Columbus, Ohio. We stopped in Cincinnati to shop at St. Theresa's Textile Trove and lo and behold they had the second issue of the magazine...we each bought a copy, cause we knew we couldn't share it. Note the photo above of Issue 1, it says Reprint...sometimes you have to do whatever you can and a reprint was what was then available.

After getting my hands on that second issue I always hoped to be in the magazine...well my chance came about for Issue Seven, when Pokey Bolton saw the work in an exhibit called Art Quilts: Encrustations at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary, North Carolina. She called and asked for permission for my piece called "Jeremiah's Joy" to be included in the magazine....reflecting back on that day, I wonder if anyone ever told her "no".
I was fortunate to appear in Issue Nine too and I was just as excited then as I was the first time, for Issue Seven. As part of the mother/daughter duo who co-own Fiber on a Whim we have been delighted each and every time that the staff of Quilting Arts has excepted an article or highlighted our work. But let me tell you they have out done themselves with this 100th issue; our pages our absolutely beautiful.
The cover is gorgeous and look how well it coordinates with a peak at one of our pages. If you are not a subscriber I hope you will seek out this 100th Issue, it is lovely. We are so happy to be included.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you drop by again soon...
Check out our new line of hand-dyed counted cross stitch fabric, absolutely luscious...would also make great backgrounds for applique and mixed media art work as the texture is wonderful.
We got to catch up with friends, see beautiful, inspiring quilts and booths full of goodies. Kristin vended at the first QuiltCon in Austin and was so excited about all the younger attendees, well those attendees have aged a bit over the years but it is still an exciting show to attend.

Here are a couple of pics of our booth;

I am always amazed at how many examples we can hang and how many of our products we can get into a 10 foot by 10 foot booth. Our goal is to inspire the attendees and hopefully we do that.

We quickly drove home to repack before our next event and look at what we found....
a bit of spring.....

Then we headed back to Nashville for the Needlework Market, open to wholesale buyers only. We introduced our new line of hand-dyed Aida cross stitch fabric. Also introduced were our new counted cross stitch designs, 4 photo realistic flowers and a funky bird. This isn't as much of a stretch as you may think...we specialize in textured fabric...this has texture, just for another use. Look for them in our booth and eventually online.

The set-up for this show is really cool your booth is the front room of your suite, here is a peak through our window.

After the 2018 holidays I looked around at my lack of organized supplies and how my work space had no space to actually work....isn't that what you should be doing in your studio is working/creating.

I decided that a deep clean was needed so I tackled my stash closet first, organizing was needed but first I pulled everything out, dumping it on the guest bed. To be totally honest I could only do a couple shelves of fabric at a time and I had to be brutal.

This was a small portion of the mess, we donated about 7 huge trash bags....hopefully someone else can really find pleasure in using all that fabric. Then we tackled yarn, I actually lost track of how many big Rubbermaid bins left.....the feeling of relief is great. Now you can actually find things in this room because everything is organized and "put away".

After this I moved to my actual studio space...

This doesn't look too bad, but if you look closely things are piled every which way and there wasn't anymore room to put anything on a shelf....so....every thing got touched. A few years ago I actually got rid of any books I was no longer interested in, things I had moved beyond, techniques I had no interest in ever doing. This time most books stayed, everything else was sorted through, recycled, labeled. I can actually find things and now I actually have room for new "stuff".

Wow....you can actually see the floor, under the tables are empty and my "table buddy" could lay in the sunshine because there was room for him. This has changed a bit since the photo because my stereo receiver died and the new one is bigger, bulkier. It almost killed me to given in to cluttering up the space again, but it was either that or no music....that just wouldn't work, I need music.

The Thermofax had been taking up space on the work/sewing tables, if I really needed to spread out I had to put it on the cutting table and then back again. So....Managed to find a cart (that I already had) for the Thermofax machine and roll it under the cutting table with a white Singer featherweight riding along ...perfect spot, can easily access the Thermofax machine and the sewing table now has room to actually work on it without doing gymnastics.

Reality struck, prepping for the upcoming shows and filling orders had priority. Cleaning, organizing got put on hold in order to get back to dyeing fabric, first needing to mix those dyes and fortunately the weather cooperated with me....

Problem was getting to my respirator.....so I grabbed a mask and went to work...notice the door is open and the sun is shining....rather unusual around here this past 6 months, more rain than sun it seems.

Our online classes began February 11th, so we needed to take time to make a few videos...I grabbed my phone and took a photo or the camera person...dear daughter didn't know I was taking her photo but I loved it.
To try and act like I wasn't taking her photo I took a couple of the work table, this photo shows the items in the kits the students recieved in one class.
My studio is clean and ready to create in; however, it is so empty it hurts as my "table buddy" passed away since I took the photo of the work table. It feels so very weird to sit at my machine and not have his little face looking at me and hearing him bark out the window. Miss you Rocket Man!
Speaking from my point of view this has not always been easy, I don't work like this usually, it takes a lot for me to get into the flow. For me I cannot just call up those "creative juices" that are needed to create these new pieces, so working collaboratively with my dear daughter has been a blessing....bouncing ideas with one another is a great way to begin our residency.

Here are some more photos of our new work;

For that last couple of years we have limited the number of colors we were going to use to create new work for the booth, in order to give it a very cohesive look. This year when all the colors were chosen my response even surprised me...but these colors reminded me of my childhood.

So....then my next line was something about "pinwheels"....I thought it would be cool to create a pinwheel quilt...using a pinwheel block....however; there seems to have been a "slight" bit of miscommunication, because this next quilt is what came about.

Next thing I knew dimensional pinwheels were appearing all over the studio, then came the problem of traveling with a 3-D quilt.....

after a bit of a discussion the idea of attaching the pinwheels with snaps was floated out there and it has worked beautifully. Then a friend suggested that we show how the quilt would look if the pinwheels were stitched down so.....

I swear two brains are so much better than one....when we bounce things around it is so much fun to create these new pieces.

When daughter dear began the large pinwheel quilt she had planned her stems and leaves to look a bit different than the end result. However, after trying the first ones out they just didn't work, so....... amazingly the next quilt came about because there was no way she was going to let them go to waste.
This quilt was the result of not wasting the leaves and stem....hmmm....I added a bit of wool and our new hand-dyed cotton velveteen. It felt like this quilt created itself and that is a wonderful feeling when creating new work.

Thanks for stopping by....there are still several other pieces to come.
Thanks to sweet daughters' efforts I thought I'd use those pics, show off a few new pieces and those of others who posted their work with our burlap on Instagram.

During our April residency for the last few years we concentrate on making all new work for our booth at shows for the coming year. This year was no different; however our time in Paducah was shorter, we then taught in Peoria, Ill, came home and left soon for Spring Quilt Market, returned home long enough to repack boxes and leave for QSDS in Columbus, Ohio. Whew!!!! No wonder I didn't post anything.

We have been trying to show how we use our products in Home Dec, Quilts, Garments, 3-D pieces and Mixed Media. The first 2 photos are of new pillow designs and the patterns are available on our website.

Flower Basket Pillow;
This pillow uses burlap and osnaburg in Heather; a new color introduced at market. The flower basket is wool applique, using Mary Flanagan Woolens.

Tuscan Bird Pillow;

We used Mint Hand-dyed Burlap for this pillow, scraps from our stash of commercial fabrics in shades of "tuscan" and "butternut", because like many of you...we cannot resist shopping for fabric everywhere we go. The embroidery was all done using our hand-dyed floss and perle cottons.
You see our vacation destination is the spot I have always spent summers, very near and dear to my heart. While we are there we only have a sketchy connection to internet, which is absolutely wonderful in some ways and not so great in others. Writing and loading photos to this blog is not easy and taking a laptop is just so impractical....so here is just a couple photos....
Wouldn't you hate to leave a spot like this?

Now...I grudgingly have to wrap my head around getting back to work and hopefully posting a bit of fun and creative blogs about what we are up to. We will be just a tad slow as dear daughter will have to undergo another procedure in the "infected tooth" saga that has slowed things down for many months.

Stay tuned and thanks for stopping by.
Right now I would much rather be prepping to head for the lake than work. Grandson was very willing this past week to help me with gathering what we need, something tells me that's because he is more than ready to head north for fun, sun, water and family. We decided that we would pile it in the corner of the family room so we could easily continue watching the World Cup.

Watching it all accumulate is making me very happy cause it means vacation is getting much closer; however this little guys attitude says he's not thrilled with what is happening. Maybe his mood is being affected by all the other commotion in his "space"; take note of the quilt it is his, he knows that but he's not usually allowed to be directly on the couch...hmmm. The mood may also be because of all the commotion in the room...remember everybody here wants to watch the World Cup so this is what the rest of the room looks like.
Oh, for the Inktense class you will probably like an apron, old shirt or clothes that aren't your best. We will have a good time and hopefully you will have a new technique or two to add to your "toolbox".
One of the other fun aspects of QSDS (Quilt Surface Design Symposium) is the "Friday Evening Event", everyone gathers to raise funds for the scholarship fund. Appetizers are offered, a bit of wine, the mapping out of strategies. The reason to have a strategy are the wonderful donations of door prizes and the "artist auction" offerings. Most attendees purchase several door prize tickets, hoping for the chance to win one of the items that have caught their eye. BUT.....the artist auction offerings are the real focus.....competition is fierce, but with laughter and comradery.

The first Friday, we were fortunate to acquire "The Murmur of Conversation" by Seth Apter which has been proudly added to our art collection. The colors and texture of this piece are stunning.

The second Friday, we got lucky again...this time adding "Inner Landscapes: Pink and Grey" by Heide Stoll-Weber. This piece looks fabulous at home on the newly painted pale gray walls...that daughter dear assisted in painting this year.

Each year several scholarships are awarded to people with need of assistance. For this reason the fun is also extremely important, making it possible for anyone with an interest in "fiber" to add a technique to their "toolbox". We are very happy to lend a hand each year to that endeavor.
During the 16 days, there are 4 different sessions. Two "5" day sessions, each 5 day session has a different selection of classes offered; and two "2" day sessions, again with different selections of classes. So.....I decided a 2 day session with Deborah Fell on collage.

We created a variety of papers in a colorway we had chosen prior to arriving...play time with paint, paper and stuff, ah heaven. It was surprising how many different things we had all brought along as "found" paper, fabric scraps or just stuff. One student came back from lunch on Saturday with a few pieces she had found between the classroom and the cafeteria. (and daughter dear complains that I pick up everything along a walk) I was in good company in this class.

Here is a sampling of the papers I created to work from;

One afternoon I snuck into the classroom Seth Apter was teaching in and raided Kristin's work table in order to put a little pattern on my fabrics I'd brought for my collage class.

The fabrics are hand-dyed organdy and voile, I was so pleased that my marking making actually showed up very nicely on these "sheer" fabrics. Paper behind them is a piece of canvas washed with the colorway I was working in, Deborah suggested we make some papers that have a soft/pale colors.

After a couple hours of prepping papers, we started playing around with them; this is actually a piece of Kraftex. I decided I really like using this as my base for collage....love, love, love it. It held up so well to the paint, (I could have used more water to get a better watercolor wash, but it was my first time working with it.) stamping, dragging a fork with paint on the tines across it...and of course stitching. These first couple of photos show me just fiddling around. The blue piece is also on Kraftex and I feel is a great landscape.

Then I pulled a piece of canvas, to which I added painted Bristol paper, Lutradur scraps I had laying around, a scrap of cheesecloth and linen.

Next up was Evolon; which we started carrying about a year ago, but with our schedule this is the first time I got to play with it. Using a color wash spray gave me a very soft background, adding a thin acrylic paint in spots worked well. Little stamping and painted Mistyfuse added shading/depth.

As I looked around my table there were great things to add...an old piece of encaustic that I didn't like, bristol paper, cheesecloth, grunge board and silk. It needed some other marks and the sewing machine gave me the marks I needed.

Here's a couple of photos of my wall;
This last one is still in progress, it needs some stronger marks and some stitching; but it is on the Evolon and shows a piece of the "sheer" fabric (believe it's the voile). Since returning home I have not had time to return to "playing"....soon I hope. Goal is to actually use the batik as a quilted mat behind the collage.

These are all from a two day class. This is what happens when you have the time to create, when the atmosphere is thick with creativity. You play, make new friends, eat and play some more.
The first 2 years daughter dear maned the shop on her own. Years ago I had gone with a friend and taken classes, we had a wonderful time. Kristin had taken a class several years ago from Noriko Endo. This year was the first time in many that I had returned, I did so because she registered to take a class with Seth Apter. She had an amazing class, she and her classmates each created wonderful pieces of "book art".
Does she not look happy....this is how she looked every day for the 5 days of her class with Seth and everyone in that class glowed like this too! Fantastic teacher!

Their work tables looked like this:

And this was a clean moment.

They each had a design wall near their tables to pin up their prospective book pages:

Once they felt they were ready these pages were turned into signatures.

The rest of the photos were taken by Seth Apter of Kristins' book:
Seth will be returning to QSDS in 2020; however there are some fantastic teachers lined up for next year 2019. www.qsds.com

Check out the schedule, tell your friends and join in the fun. It is like summer camp for adults, you can stay in the dorm, eat in the cafeteria (yummy food) and enjoy the wonders of creativity in the "air".

Thanks for stopping by.
This past week daughter dear had surgery and is hopefully on the mend..after a long year. In between cat naps she is processing our latest addition to our product line.

This May at Spring
Quilt Market we introduced our new hand-dyed Cotton Velveteen. We felt
this would be a great addition to our line of textures. We have had fun
making a velveteen rabbit, pincushions, and adding it in to art quilts
here at the start. We can't wait to play more with it as the summer
goes. We have been amazed by how well it has been received and are so
happy everyone is enjoying it. We finally got a second batch dyed up

This week we will still be taking it easy and have the grandson here to entertain "us". Hopefully I will be able to show you a few photos of the fun we had at QSDS (Quilt & Surface Design Symposium) in Columbus, OH this year. If you have never heard of it, go check out their website, the teachers they bring together each year are very impressive....it is just like going to a great "art" camp for adults.
For those of you who follow us on Facebook you may have seen that not so nice photo that my darling daughter/partner posted of me "resting" in the studio. We actually have managed to get our work space set up, the shop/gallery area is ready and open for everyone to drop by. We have also managed to get some work.

So her she is at "her" workstation;

I should have taken a photo before we carried everything in, but I think you can get the idea....just blank white curtains and tables. We have learned a bit over the last 11 years of doing shows, we discuss or draw up a rough floor plan before we get to the show site even if we have the same spot as in previous years. But....somehow....we always freak out at some point during set-up day....

Stacks of boxes....and stuff....somehow we need to organize this mess.

One wall looks good....what about the other...it takes 2 of us to hang those curtains and one of us (see that arm on the box above) is busy visiting with friends.....

There is an old saying that goes....it gets worse, before it gets better....

Usually right about now we begin to realize we brought too much "stuff" with us and that there is no way we are going to get everything out...no matter how hard we try...one of us always says.... well; after some things sell then we can get it out and it will look like a whole new booth....

This is about the point that the "younger one, who admits she was not blessed with "patience" walks away" while I "fancy it up"....trying to fit more in and make it look good.....
Finished our gathering of "stuff" we wanted to work on and bed. I couldn't get a photo this morning as we left before 6 AM for Hampton, VA and the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Fest. Soooo....before we unloaded our gear at the hotel I snapped a pic.
Surprising that we actually could see out the back window all during our drive...it has been fuller than this over the years. This is our first show of 2018, boy was it hard to wrap our heads around this whole thing. Hopefully, we have not forgotten anything.

This is how we are now enjoying the remainder of our day.
Recently we have been dyeing fabric, threads and fibers like crazy, hoping to make it through at least the next 3 shows. We are headed to Hampton, VA for Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival on Tuesday, come by booth 1310 and say hello. Love meeting and seeing what everyone has been up to over the last year. Then we come home for 2 1/2 days before heading to Nashville, TN for Nashville Needlework Market, which is for needlework retailers. We will be home for a whole week after Nashville, don't know how much dyeing we could squeeze in, so that's why we have been pushing so hard. Leaving for the Raleigh Quilt Show in North Carolina on March 14th, kind of puts things into perspective....not much time, not much gets done! By the time we get back we will really have work to do before heading to Paducah, KY for our artist in residency in April.

Here is a peak at a couple of new pieces that will be introduced in Nashville:

We each have a stack of more to do....yipppeee....this is what it's all about. This year pieces will continue to show off our threads and how they work with our fabrics. I did "cheat" just a little cause I threw in a little glitz with gold metallic thread....oh be still my heart...and I didn't even get chastised for it, the younger one said it looked good.

When we start laying things out for the year, we limit our color palette. This year at Spring Quilt Market we are introducing 3 new colors, so building off of those we have set out about 10 to 12 colors to create all our new display pieces. I admit the first time we did this I just about freaked out but our booth looked so cohesive that we decided to repeat our efforts. This time I am more relaxed and actually finding that it gets my creativity flowing....guess it may have something to do with not getting all wrapped up in what to use for each piece.

Road trip here we come....Fiber on a Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03964441100368892245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4952934773333263122.post-87325062366636144242018-02-08T21:30:00.000-05:002018-02-08T21:33:15.212-05:00Making Up For Lost Time......You would not believe how much dyeing we have been doing, somewhere along the line we decided that we would try to get enough dyed to last 4 months or so....if I didn't have a sick puppy in my lap I would be laughing at my naivete. Over the last couple of weeks we have dyed about 40 yards of burlap, 250 yards of osnaburg, I don't have an accurate count on thread. Must confess I was probably told, just went in one ear and out the other as I was busy "creatively thinking". That's my excuse and I am sticking to it.

I tried to photograph the clothesline, but the room was glowing red from all the sunshine coming in and that sunshine has been scarce so I found myself just standing there amidst all the color. Sometimes it's the little things that make you smile.

Mostly over the first week I was sitting cuddling this little guy, he got sick after cuddling me for the 2 weeks I was down with the flu, so now it's my turn. He has been with us for 13 years and will turn 14 this year, at least that's what we believe as he was a stray who followed us home from a walk in 2005. Strong little man who was living with the Canada Geese and was an emaciated 6 pounds.
He is finally feeling more like himself, still napping....but...seeking out more than just our laps, today his bed was moved from place to place as the sun moved about the house. He is bouncing with excitement for food and drink. For over a week we were feeding him rice and steamed chicken, and then using that chicken broth to lace his water, fooling him into drinking, now he is back to his regular diet with a little tweak...wet food. Hey he is old...I know how he feels...we all need a bit of help now and then.

I have actually done a bit of hand stitching over the last few days, hopefully I will post a sneak peek over the next week.

Thanks for stopping by and hopefully posts will get a bit more regular as this year goes on....Fiber on a Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03964441100368892245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4952934773333263122.post-31833950730986976432018-01-16T20:30:00.000-05:002018-01-16T20:30:16.240-05:00January Blahs.......Last week was one of those crazy weather weeks in the south, swinging temperatures that always bring with them a wealth of "crappy germs" that flourish. The kind that everyone tries to avoid, me especially, mainly because we are too busy to be "under the weather". Well I wasn't so lucky, thank goodness Kristin is in-between her battles with being down and under...only one of us can go down at a time. As a result I haven't been any help over the last couple of days.

Today I walked into my sewing studio to retrieve "something"...forgot what, when I saw the room. So I took some photos to show what happens around here. The problem as I see it, is also what I love about the room...flat work surfaces.
They collect "junk" it is pretty junk, but junk all the same and the thought of sorting through all that "junk" well that made my head hurt more. Flat surfaces come in many sizes.....
Guess Kristin finished photographing, sent the photos' out and then forgot these were left behind.

So now you can get a feel for why I forgot what I was looking for...I admit I turned around and walked out, back to my recliner and a nap.
We have discussed many things we would like to do this year, hopefully we will accomplish many of them. Stay tuned! Once we start doing the shows the end of February we are pretty much continuously on the go....so during this time we typically try to restock as much as possible and produce what we will need for the first six months.

This is what my work space looked like last night ...
More to come!Fiber on a Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03964441100368892245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4952934773333263122.post-47134638237348008412017-12-29T20:22:00.002-05:002017-12-29T21:15:09.268-05:00Another Year Flys By......Guess it is really nearing the end of 2017 and I feel myself being very reflective, this was especially evident yesterday as Kristin was writing our newsletter and asked me about what we should say about our plans for 2018. Usually by this time we have done some "brainstorming" regarding the coming year, guess we had done some of that on our drive home from International Quilt Festival/Houston in November, but I was drawing a blank. I was busy ironing so orders could ship, sometimes when ironing my "mind" is a total blank , so she caught me off guard...I had no answers for her. Guess I should have claimed I was just tired; but I think I may have said something like I am getting old and just didn't remember squat (dumb move on my part).

Upon returning home after "Festival" we had one guild lecture and we have only dyed when absolutely necessary to fill orders. Now don't get the idea we have been on vacation, far from it. Between holiday meals, decorating the house for the holidays, buying gifts, writing to friends and family.....you know all that usual family stuff we all do, we decided to tackle a few projects we kept saying we would get to.

First we tackled the family room, cause while in Houston for Festival hubby had patched earlier water leak "holes in walls, skylights created to find said leaks". Don't think the grandson figured that the beginning of his Thanksgiving vacation would be spent emptying the room and helping to paint. Thank goodness he was a good sport and assisted us. Once the paint had dried we got down to the fun part, redecorating. Prior purchases came out or hiding, you know sometimes you see something you just have to have...not sure how you will work it in...if you love it, you will find the perfect spot for it.

As we were finishing, the forecast said we were going to get a dusting of snow, now this doesn't happen often in our neck of the woods. Seems that dusting was a bit more than they thought and it slowed us down just a tad...pretty but a bit early for a white Christmas.
After finishing a slight problem reared it's ugly head, you could see the entry from the family room couch and it looked awful...so I'm sure you can guess what happened next???? You guessed it, we painted it, also put all new doorknobs on all 4 doors....we call it the back entry, cause the entry to our house has a two story entry, then has this other part from the garage.

Okay don't start laughing but once we were done with that area, I sort of asked for another room to be done....the powder room...one of those 4 doors. So we rented a steamer and stripped 30 year old wallpaper off un-primed Sheetrock, thank goodness for Kristin.
Things sort of "snowballed" from there...freshly painted ceiling, walls, trim and vanity, also a new vanity top/sink, new mirror, new light fixture, towel bar and toilet paper holder. It look fabulous...just needs new flooring....okay I give us a break for now!
Then came a touch of "whimsy", shelves that look like old suitcases...they are metal. A "Home Sweet Home" vintage stitchery, vintage perfume bottles and atomizers. One is mine, a gift from my grandmother, and one is my grandmothers', love the smile they bring me each time I enter.
Love this Santa and my new "travel trailer bird house" with all it's holiday finery....note the wall color in the background of these...this is the entry that still needs to be done...however; not by us...two stories is more than we want to tackle. Time to find a pro!

Time to buckle down and get back to work....spent the last couple of days dyeing, processing orders and doing inventory. I "hate" counting! Don't know about you, but when I am in a creative slump going into my studio and handling "stuff" triggers ideas, and creative juices begin to flow.....so think about inventory a minute...for me it is the handling of things I love, things that give me ideas, things that spur on my desire to create. Sooooo....today I wound up with these (solid hand-dyed cotton organdy) on my account...

and we have barely begun to inventory everything, at this rate I will be broke by the beginning of 2018!

At least I am not dwelling on 2017 anymore, what I did or DIDN'T get accomplished....because now my mind is in overdrive as to what I can do in 2018....whoohoo!

Stay tuned to see what happens with my purchases as the year goes on!
This year we have tried to balance out things just a tad, taking time to do things we have only hoped to do.

Example of this was making kits for projects before we went to Quilt Festival in Houston, every year we say we are going to create these type of kits, but we never get to it. This year we actually accomplished it. Here's a peak at one such kit.

Since getting home we have taken time to regroup so that we would be able to tackle some of those projects we always put off because we have too much on our plates. After celebrating Thanksgiving early with our family we had time to tackle our family room. We have been complaining about how dark the room has gotten over the years. First we thought it may be the result of the trees filling out and getting larger, so last fall several had limbs trimmed and one was removed...but still seemed dark.
So...

It really helps to have younger family jump in to help....she taped all the woodwork (and we have a ton), then she climbed that ladder and got down to work. My grandson pitched in during his vacation time, remember that problem with how dark the room seemed, well after disconnecting the ceiling fixture it was really dark. In order to paint the ceiling we needed someone moving a light around and telling us when we missed a spot.

Putting the room back together has been interesting since I really want to start my holiday decorating, a little too much on my mind. So.....slowly but surely.... Love the new wall clock, bins and cotton...surprisingly they helped tie things together, at first we were planning to paint all that woodwork white, I really shudder each time I think of how difficult that chore would be. Sorry just cannot face that task, maybe if I was 20 years younger.
The windows used to have Levelor blinds that matched the woodwork...hubby took them down. New curtains had been hung, before he got home to face the task and we were blown away with the difference they made, getting the blinds down was another surprise. These windows are huge....and the light....wow!
While buying the curtains, and a few other items at IKEA we couldn't resist checking out the artwork. The minute we saw this picture it had to come home with us....we instantly thought about our summers at the lake in northern Minnesota. This was captured in Sweden, but ever since a trip to Scandinavia I know why so many people immigrated to Minnesota...it looks like home. Now every day we will have a sweet reminder of those wonderful summer days.
My quilt entitled "Winter's Blanket" part of my Minnesota series looks great on the new wall color and the new artwork compliments it well. The feeling of accomplishment is fantastic and the two of us are grinning from ear to ear every time we walk into the room. Woohoo....

I am now officially ready to start my holiday decorating and maybe, just maybe tackle another project around the house.

Thanks for stopping by.
But it was well worth it considering that once again Houston and the International Quilt Festival did not disappoint. Kudos to the city of Houston, your city welcomed us with open arms.

Apologies for not keeping you all up to date with all our preparations going into "Festival", but I need to admit that I got a bit overwhelmed. We were teaching 3 classes, which meant assembling kits, gathering supplies and shipping all that down to Houston by a certain date. Throw in a show in Asheville, NC, dyeing, ironing, making kits to sell, writing up new patterns for projects we were trying to finish...note the word "finish". Oh and throw into the mix a 20 foot booth on the show floor....

Our classes were great and we thank all those who chose to take a class with us. Now setting up our booth and being ready for preview night is a whole other story. Our 12 boxes we shipped with FEDEX did not show up in Houston in time....they were misdirected to Dallas. Now, this little thing really was "STRESSFUL"....we didn't have many of the new things to sell that Kristin had been posting about on Instagram.... Thank you to everyone who came back to our booth later in the show to check on us and see the new stuff. I am sorry that neither of us took any photos of the booth....we realized it driving away from Houston after the close of the show. Guess "stress" really got to us.

Here is the last thing I finished before we left for Houston on October 29th..
The pattern will soon be up on line, it is called Blossoms. It is all about trying different techniques in a manageable size...creating flowers with cheesecloth, ric rac, and wool. Do you have bits of lace, ribbon, buttons or even charms you have wondered what to do with? Perfect....add them and make these pennants very personal.

This project actually spurred on a change in our Texture Exploration class. I designed a whole new project for the class because of what came about in these pennants and I am so excited about it. We have taught it three times now, the reaction of the students and their creativity has been wonderful. Must admit that this is what we all hope for...trying something and letting it expand into more....the stars aligned.

I promise not to let 2 months go by before posting again...we do not have a show until the end of February 2018 when we will be at Mid-Atlantic in Hampton, VA. You know what that means....time to actually create new work and experiment with ideas for new products, and projects. Whoohoo! We are so excited about the next several months. Stay tuned.

Thank you for stopping by!
For example, once I stretched out white fabric in my front yard, taken a bucket of dye, a broom, dyeing the fabric by flicking dye on it with the broom. The cars passing frequently slowed, stopped and wondered "aloud" what on earth I was doing. Another time I was discharging fabrics on the driveway, once rinsed they were thrown over the holly bushes along the driveway to dry. The grandson of my neighbor pulled her down the street, shouting with glee...."look Christmas trees". I have new neighbors so today this is what they were viewing while sitting on their deck.
These luscious bits of ric rac, vintage laces, doilies and linens greeted them as they enjoyed the late afternoon. Pretty eye candy...I hope they enjoyed the riot of colors. So far they have not asked what on earth we are doing....
